Nothing Can Stop True Love

FADE IN:
EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD – AFTERNOON
At the Kempner High School football field all the Senior students are on the field about to graduate. KATIE WOOD, the Valedictorian, is finishing her speech.

KATIE
And now class of 2003 we move on to greater things!

CLASS OF 2003
(Cheers all at once)

CUT TO:
The camera goes from the cheering crowd that is all standing to JOHN PLUNKETT who is still seated with a sad expression on his face.

JOHN
(Quietly, sad expression on his face)
Greater things…….

CUT TO:
The ceremony is over and all the students are on the field with their parents taking pictures. Katie runs up to John and gives him a huge hug.

KATIE
John. Can you believe it?! We finally did it! I’m so happy right now! How about you?!…You look kind of sad. Is everything alright?

JOHN
Of course. It’s just all so overwhelming. Graduating and what not…Great speech, Katie. You did really well..

KATIE
Well I owe you for letting me practice in front of you. Without that I probably would have never been able to get through it. I would have been very nervous.

JOHN
It was no problem at all. I was glad to do it. Hey. My parents want to get a picture of us together. Is that OK?

KATIE
Of course it is! I love your parents!

CUT TO:
John’s parents, ROBERT and SHERE, approach John and Katie.

SHERE
That was a wonderful speech, Katie. No wonder you got into Stanford. California is going to be a big change from Texas, you know? It’s a long way from here. I’m sure John is going to miss you very much.

KATIE
Well I’m going to miss him too! He’s been my best friend all through high school, but there’s no reason to worry. We’re definitely going to keep in touch.

JOHN
Of course we will.

ROBERT
How about we get you two in a picture together?

CUT TO:
John and Katie get together and he puts his arm around Katie.

CUT BACK TO:
Robert readies the camera and we have a CLOSE UP of Robert and his camera.

ROBERT
This goes with your speech, Katie. You two say, greater things!

The camera focuses on John and Katie while they are standing together for the picture to be taken. The handheld camera goes off and makes the screen flash with John and Katie standing together. The whole screen turns white with the flash.

FADE OUT WITH THE FLASH

FADE IN:
EXT. HOUSE – NIGHT
It’s a graduation party at a house and it’s flooded with students inside the house and in the backyard.

CUT TO:
INT. HOUSE – NIGHT
John is inside the house and he is talking to one of his good friends KYLE.

KYLE
So are you finally going to tell Katie how you felt about her these past few years?

JOHN
No. I just don’t think it will matter. That it won’t make the things I want to happen, happen.

KYLE
Good…I mean, look man. I’ve been one of your best friends for years and I think you’re doing the right thing. Well a good thing for you and for her by not telling her how you feel. I don’t want you to get hurt by the response that I’m sure she’ll give and I wouldn’t want it to hurt y’all’s friendship. Being around both of you, a lot, just makes me see y’all as only being really good friends. Well great friends, but it seems as though that will never change. Also she’ll be moving to California and attending Stanford. That is far from here and you know many guys will want to talk to her. I think it’s best that you just move on.

JOHN
That’s true…And like I said. I’m pretty sure me telling her wouldn’t matter anyway. There is no way she feels as strongly for me as I do for her.

CUT TO:
From the front door we see Katie walk in with some of her girlfriends and she spots John and Kyle across the room. She smiles and walks up to both of them. The camera follows her up to John and Kyle.

KATIE
Hey guys! Are y’all enjoying the party?…Man. It’s crazy to think that this will be the last time we see a lot of these people.

KYLE
Yeah I know. It’s weird.

KATIE
Although I think it’s safe to say that we won’t miss a few of them though…I have to say it will be good to get away, but I’m so going to miss you guys. I don’t know what I’m going to do without y’all.

JOHN
You’ll make tons of friends at Stanford. You’ll love it there.

KYLE
Yeah. You’ll probably forget about me and John.

KATIE
Don’t be ridiculous! We’ll keep in contact. Trust me. There is no way I could ever forget you two…Hey, Kyle. I need to talk to you for a sec. What we were talking about earlier. You mind?

KYLE
Sure. I say we go upstairs. It will be quieter. I’ll be there in a minute.

KATIE
OK. I’ll be upstairs.

Katie leaves and walks up the stairs and Kyle waits til she’s gone to tell John something.

JOHN
What’s this all about?

KYLE
I figured you were going to ask that. It’s nothing serious, man. She’s just worried about some college stuff. You know. Moving and all.

JOHN
OK…….

KYLE
We won’t be long, man.

Kyle walks up the stairs to go talk to Katie and John waits for them to return. John’s attention then turns to BRANDEN, a friend of his walking towards him.

BRANDEN
Johnny!…How’s it going man?! This party is killer! Why don’t you have a drink in your hands? You gots to get drunk! Hang here, man. I’ll go grab you a drink.

Branden walks away to go get John a drink and John waits there.

CUT TO:
INT. ROOM – NIGHT
Kyle and Katie are already in mid conversation and they appear to be arguing.

KATIE
Look, Kyle. What happened between us was a mistake. I should have never kissed you. I wish I didn’t.

KYLE
Katie. Why are you fighting this?

KATIE
Fighting what?…Look. This would kill John if he ever found out. Especially if what you said is true about the way he feels about me. Lately I’ve started to think that maybe I feel the same way about him.

KYLE
That’s ridiculous! How could you like him?! He’s such a loser!

KATIE
What?! I thought you were supposed to be his friend!

CUT TO:
INT. HOUSE – NIGHT
John is still waiting for Branden to come back, but decides to see what is taking Kyle and Katie so long so he walks up the stairs.

CUT BACK TO:
INT. HOUSE – NIGHT
Kyle and Katie are still talking in the room upstairs.

KATIE
You are not the friend I thought you were and especially not to John!

KYLE
Look, Katie…..

Kyle doesn’t even finish what he was going to say. He leans in to try and kiss Katie, but she pulls away.

KATIE
Kyle. Stop it!

Kyle again tries to kiss Katie and he does it more forcefully this time. This time he’s successful and he’s holding Katie close and with so much force that it is too hard for her to pull away from him. He is able to start kissing her. As this is happening John walks through the doorway.

JOHN
Hey guys. What’s taking so?…….

John seeing this happen doesn’t even finish his sentence and Kyle stops kissing her.

KATIE
John. This isn’t what it looks like. I promise!

KYLE
This is exactly what it looks like!

KATIE
Shut up, Kyle!

JOHN
I…I have to go.

John turns to leave and walks out the door. Katie yells to John to try to get him to stop.

KATIE
John. Wait!…Dammit, Kyle! Look what you did!

CUT TO:
INT. HOUSE – NIGHT
John is seen running down the stairs and he is met by Branden who is holding his drink that he got for him.

BRANDEN
Dude. Where have you been? I got you your drink. Let’s drink this shit!

John doesn’t even acknowledge Branden. He walks really fast right by him and goes out the front door. Katie is seen coming down the stairs as well, but she doesn’t catch John in time. She stands at the bottom of the stairs and looks on out the front door.

FADE OUT

FADE IN:
INT. DORM ROOM – DAY
TEXT: SIX YEARS LATER.
We see Katie inside a dorm room packing up all her belongings and she is wearing a Stanford t-shirt. As she is packing, JANET, one of Katie’s friends, walks in.

JANET
Knock Knock.

KATIE
(Smile on her face)
Janet!

JANET
I just wanted to come and say goodbye. I know I’ll see you in a few months, but I still wanted to stop by.

KATIE
Thank you so much. At least it’s only one more year for you and you’ll be done too.

JANET
I know. Don’t remind me. Well I gotta run…Bye!

KADENCE
Bye!

Janet gives Katie a hug and then leaves as Katie finishes packing up her belongings.

FADE OUT

FADE IN:
EXT. AIRPORT – DAY
Katie exits the airport and walks up to her parents TOM and SARA. They are there to pick her up.

KATIE
Mom, Dad! It is wonderful to see both of you! It’s great to be back in Texas and to finally be done with school. How are y’all?

TOM
We’re great now that you’re home.

KATIE
Thanks, Dad.

Katie and her parents proceed to get in the car and they drive off.

CUT TO:
INT. CAR – DAY
Katie is in the back seat as her parents drive her home. Tom is driving and Sara is in the passenger seat in the front.

SARA
Glad to be back in Texas, Sweetie?

KATIE
I sure am, but I’m also nervous.

SARA
Well of course you are. Everyone would be during this time.

As they drive along they pass Kempner, Katie’s old High School.

KATIE
Dad look. It’s my old school. Can you pull over?

TOM
Sure, Sweetie.

Tom pulls into the parking and approaches the football field where Katie graduated.

KATIE
If y’all don’t mind I’d like to have a little time by myself here.

TOM
Of course. Just give us a ring and we’ll pick you up.

KATIE
That’s OK. I’ll just walk home. It’s nice out.

TOM
OK. See you at home. Love you.

KATIE
Love you too.

CUT TO:
EXT. PARKING LOT – DAY
Katie shuts the door to the car and her parents drive off. Katie then proceeds to approach the fence of the football field and stares through the fence at it. While looking at the field, with her backed turned to the parking lot, she hears someone going to their car and she turns around to see who it is. It’s John going to his car. She sees him and quickly turns back around so that she might not have been seen, but John spots her.

JOHN
Katie?

KATIE
John…wow…what a surprise.

John walks from his car up to Katie.

JOHN
Hi, Katie…It’s been a long time.

KATIE
Yeah. Six years.

JOHN
What are you doing in Sugar Land?

KATIE
Well I finally graduated. I’m going to start working at a law firm.

JOHN
Wow. That’s great.

KATIE
And I’ll also be getting maa…Ummm. So what are you doing here?

JOHN
Well I teach here, actually.

KATIE
That’s cool.

JOHN
It has its days.

KATIE
Say, John…How bout we take a walk on the field? It’s been forever since I stepped foot on it.

JOHN
(John pauses for a sec, but then agrees to go take a walk on the field)

Of course.

CUT TO:
John and Katie are walking on the field and are seen talking and laughing in a Long Shot. They walk up to the bleachers and go to the top and sit down.

JOHN
It’s really good to see you, Katie. It really is.

KATIE
John?…..

JOHN
Yeah?

KATIE
Why didn’t you ever answer the phone or try to talk to me about what happened graduation night?

JOHN
I figured this would come up when I saw you.

KATIE
Well?…..

JOHN
I was hurt, Katie because of who and what Kyle turned out to be. The main reason I never answered any of your phone calls though was because I was mad at myself for never saying anything to you about how I felt. Also with you going to Stanford, and for a long time, it seemed like you’d be too far away for me to make anything happen or to start anything…I don’t know. All I know is that I messed a lot up.

KATIE
You were my best friend and there was never anything we couldn’t talk about. Never the less. Now that I’m back, I want us to be friends again. I want us to pretend that that night never happened. That we never left each other. Can we do that?

JOHN
Hearing that is so very wonderful. I would love to.

KATIE
(Huge smile on her face)
Well this is great!

JOHN
Katie. There’s just one thing and I know saying thi…..

CUT TO:
As John is talking, a car pulls into the parking lot and parks and a man get outs.

CUT BACK TO:

KATIE
Mark?!…Oh my gosh! What are you doing here?

MARK
(Smiling)

I talked to your parents and they said you were up here so here I am.

John and Katie walk down to MARK’s car.

KATIE
John. This is Mark. Mark. This is my great friend John.

MARK
Nice to meet you.

JOHN
Nice to meet you as well.

MARK
Well seeing that you’re a great friend of, Katie’s I assume that you’re coming to our wedding.

JOHN
Wow. Congratulations. I wasn’t aware that you were…..

KATIE
Ummm…Yeah. I guess I forgot to mention that. I’d absolutely love for you to be there though.

JOHN
Of course. When’s the big day?

KATIE
A little over six months from now. Well, John it was great seeing you. Call me soon and let’s get together.

JOHN
Will do.

Mark and Katie walk back to Mark’s car and get in and drive off. John watches them go and then walks to his car. After he gets in he stares out his windshield for a while with a blank expression on his face before finally starting his car.

FADE OUT

FADE IN:
INT. HOUSE – DAY
A cellphone rings and we see John answer it.

JOHN
Hello?

KATIE
Good. You’re still answering your phone…Just kidding. So are you ready to go?

JOHN
Yeah. I’ll pick you up?

KATIE
No. That’s alright. I’ll have Mark drop me off.

JOHN
Alright. See you there.

CUT TO:
INT. RESTAURANT – DAY
John is sitting at a table alone waiting for Katie. Katie arrives and is seen walking towards John and sits down.

KATIE
Hey!

JOHN
Hi. How are you?

KATIE
I’m doing well…What are you having?

JOHN
Hmm. Don’t know. Let’s see.

KATIE
Everything looks good. Of course I can’t eat too much. My wedding is just one week away…Wow. Isn’t that crazy?!…Anyway. It’s been great seeing you again these past few months. It’s something I greatly missed.

JOHN
Don’t marry Mark.

KATIE
What?!

JOHN
Don’t marry Mark.

KATIE
John. What are you doing?!

JOHN
Like you said. Our time together these past few months has been great. It feels as though you never left and what happened graduation night never happened. My feelings for you have not changed and they never will…Don’t marry Mark.

KATIE
John. How can you be doing this now?

JOHN
Look. I’m not asking you to marry me. I’m just wanting you to stop and think about any feelings you may have for me, and if you do have any, don’t try to push them down, but dwell on them. I may not have been sure about how you felt about me back in high school, but I see it now. I’m sorry to do this, but I had to. I didn’t want to live with the regret of never saying anything. I made that mistake years ago. I wasn’t going to do it again.

KATIE
(Worried look on her face)

I have to go.

Katie gets up and leaves hastily. As John sits there in silence the waitress approaches his table.

WAITRESS
(Smile on her face)
Do you know what you want?

The camera goes back to John. He looks up at the waitress and then looks toward the entrance where Katie left.

FADE OUT

FADE IN:
INT. CHURCH ROOM – DAY
SUPER TEXT: WEDDING DAY
Katie is in her wedding dress and is sitting in a room in the back of the church with her bridesmaids and her mother.

SARA
Katie. It’s your wedding day, which is a happy day, but you look sad…What’s wrong?

KATIE
Nothing, Mom.

SARA
Please tell me, Katie.

CUT TO:
INT. HOUSE – DAY
John is sitting in his living room when his mother walks in. She is dressed up for the wedding.

JOHN
Mom. What are you doing here? You’re supposed to be at the wedding.

SHERE
So are you.

JOHN
How could I possibly go just to see myself lose her again?

SHERE
That’s not why you’re supposed to go. You have to go for a different reason.

JOHN
You’re not actually suggesting that I breakup a wedding, are you? That’s a little clichéd don’t you think?

SHERE
John. Everything dealing with love is clichéd. Being clichéd isn’t always bad as long as you do it better than the ones that have done it before you.

JOHN
I just don’t think I can do that. Mark’s not a bad guy and I wouldn’t want to do that to him. Or anyone, really.

SHERE
Sometimes we have to do things we know are wrong, but they have to be done if we want to keep living…I’ll see you there.

JOHN
I don’t know.

SHERE
Well I do.

Shere exits and John stays on the couch by himself and turns on the TV.

CUT BACK TO:
INT. CHURCH ROOM – DAY
Katie and her mother are still in the room and Katie has just got done explaining everything to her mother about her problem.

SARA
Well that is something to be upset over, isn’t it?

KATIE
What do I do, Mom? I need you to decide for me.

SARA
Well the fact that you have given it this much thought must tell you something, but this is a decision that you have to make on your own. No one should tell you what you should or shouldn’t do.

KATIE
I know. It’s just so hard.

SARA
I’ll leave you to decide, but as you know there isn’t much time, so you best set your heart in the right place, which I know it always is.

KATIE
Thanks, Mom.

SARA
I love you, Sweetie.

KATIE
I love you too, Mom.

CUT BACK TO:
INT. HOUSE – DAY
John is still sitting by himself in his living room watching TV. He turns his head and sees a picture of him and Katie together. The one that was taken on graduation day. He stares at the photograph for about a minute and then gets up off the couch and runs out the door.

CUT TO:
INT. CAR – DAY
John is speeding down the road in his car going well over the speed limit and as he passes an intersection he sees blue and red lights flash. He is being pulled over. As he pulls over and the cop walks towards him he sees that it’s Kyle.

KYLE
Hello, John.

JOHN
Kyle.

KYLE
Where are you going that has got you going 92 in a 45?

JOHN
Please just give me my ticket so I can go.

KYLE
Well I’m guessing what has got you going so fast is that you’re trying to get to Katie’s wedding.

JOHN
How’d you know that?

KYLE
I heard about her wedding from a few people and after hearing about it I found out who her fiancé is. I’ve pulled him over a few times. One time was for real, but the other times were done just to mess with him.

JOHN
Look, Kyle…..

KYLE
No, John let me speak. I was in the wrong all those years back and I ruined a great friendship. I’m sorry. I truly am.

JOHN
I appreciate that, Kyle.

KYLE
Well you’ll probably appreciate this more.

JOHN
What’s that?

KYLE
Just follow me.

JOHN
Really? Thank you, Kyle.

KYLE
No need to thank me, John. I just hope you’ll forgive me.

JOHN
That’s something I did a long time ago.

KYLE
(Smile on his face)
Well we best get going.

Kyle walks back to his car and gets in. He flashes his lights and John follows him to the church.

CUT BACK TO:
INT. CHURCH ROOM – DAY:
Katie is now alone and she hears the music start to play and she is about to have to go down the aisle with her dad so she makes her way to the door in the room and opens it. When she opens it she sees John and Kyle.

KATIE
John. What are you doing here?…And with Kyle?!

KYLE
I’ll be leaving now. Congratulations, Katie. I hope you have a wonderful day and I’m very happy for you.

Kyle walks away. It’s just John and Katie in the room.

JOHN
I had to come here, Katie. I had to. Now I wasn’t asking you to marry me back at the restaurant, but I am now…Katie. Will you marry me?

KATIE
(The Bride’s music starts to play)
I…that’s my music. I have to go. I’m sorry, John.

Katie quickly walks down the hall to the main doors of the church and readies herself to walk down the aisle with her father. John races up to her, but as he gets to her the doors open and she begins to walk down the aisle. John can only look on as she does.

CUT TO:
INT. CHURCH AUDITORIUM – DAY
Mark is standing at the end of the aisle as he watches Katie make her way up to him. Everyone is standing and when she reaches him everyone sits down and the ceremony begins. PASTOR LEVIN begins to speak.

PASTOR LEVIN
Dearly beloved. We are gathered here today to witness the holy matrimony of Mark Davis and Katie Wood.

CUT TO:
John walks through the doors and stops the proceedings.

JOHN
I object!

CROWD
(gasps)

PASTOR LEVIN
We haven’t got to that part yet, son, but since you’ve already said so go ahead and proceed I guess.

JOHN
Oh…Well I object to this wedding.

PASTOR LEVIN
Yes. You’ve already stated that.

JOHN
Ya…Well I object because I am in love with the bride to be. That is. I am in love with my bride to be.

MARK
This is ridiculous! Someone get this man out of here!

In walks Kyle.

MARK
Officer. Please escort this man out of here! He is disrupting our wedding!

KYLE
Sorry. I’m here to make sure this man says what he has to say. I tried to stop him once before, but not again.

JOHN
Katie. I’m out here. I’m out here and I’m not leaving until you say what I know is in your heart…Do you love me?

KATIE
(Katie looks at John and then turns to Mark and pauses for a few seconds)
…..I do.

MARK
(Hurt look on his face)

KATIE
I am so very sorry, Mark.

Katie turns around and runs up to John and they embrace each other. Mark is seen in the background walking away. The crowd is chatting loudly amongst each other.

KATIE
I do love you, John, and yes, I will marry you.

John and Katie embrace each other. John has a big smile on his face.

KATIE
(Jokingly adds)
Did you have to do this in such a clichéd way?

JOHN
Everything dealing with love is clichéd. I just hope I did it better than the rest.

KATIE
(Smiles)
You did.

John and Katie embrace each other. They kiss and they both smile.
